Book Review: Very Nice

My husband just rolls his eyes whenever he catches me watching one of the many drama-filled shows on Bravo. I sheepishly smile but never change the channel. “The drama is nuts,” I tell him. “But the crazy cast is what makes it so good.”

This is exactly what it is like reading the new novel, VERY NICE by Marcy Dermansky. It’s the crazy cast of characters that makes this book so good. This new book is like that second bowl of chocolate ice cream or that third margarita: you just can’t keep yourself from wanting more.

VERY NICE, releasing July 2, has everything that you could possibly need from a summer read: humor, a cute dog, a love triangle, drama, sex, and of course, lots of drama about sex. Basically it’s a soap opera or a “scripted” Bravo show in book form. It’s a fast read that keeps the pages turning as you gobble it up. Grab a cold glass of your favorite rose and take this one out by the pool. But wear plenty of sunscreen because you won’t want to get up until you’re done reading.

Told from the perspective of five different characters, we are taken on a roller coaster ride of the best kind. The complicated lives of these five characters intersect during one summer in both Manhattan and Connecticut. A “very nice” kiss between a student and her writing professor ends up snowballing into something bigger and crazier, sucking those around them–parents, co-workers, neighbors, and a really sweet dog–up into the drama. The characters are equal parts real and frustrating and you’ll be totally invested in each of their crazy stories.

So you can go ahead and stop. No more searching. I’ve found what you’re looking for. It’s right here. VERY NICE is the perfect summer read. I loved this book because I love reading (and watching) about real-life drama from the outside looking in. In VERY NICE, you are allowed to be that fly on the wall that knows all of the secrets, all of the sex, all of the drama while simultaneously waiting for all of it to come crashing together in some horrific event.

A big thank you to the publisher, Knopf, for sending me an advanced copy. What a fun delight and so…very nice!
